-One match. All it took was one match for me to get a title shot for Roxi Johnson's Soaring Eagle Championship. Jessica Downs wasn't a challenge. No one over in Redemption has been a challenge yet. And the same can be said about my time with EWC so far. All these Feds have been testing my skills....just to see if the hype is real or not. But GOL......they only saw one match and new that Jack Tillman was the real deal and a name to get behind. So I better not disappoint........especially against a name like Roxi Johnson. A win here helps my young career. A loss means I'm just going to be over looked again. I need this win.
-Been watching video of Roxi now since the card was first announced. Quick on her feet and on the mat. Deadly if given the opportunity. Risk taker though. That's my open. Wait for her to make the wrong move. She's not afraid to go for it all. Will put her body on the line. But she has plenty of holes in her offense and defense. Years of those high flying moments are finally starting to catch up to her and its noticeable. Your average wrestler won't notice, but I'm not an average wrestler. She gets up slower. Starting to lose that pep in her step. Back, knees, and neck are targets to take advantage of. Keep her close. Ground and pound her. Always keep an eye on her. Don't let her out of your site. Make it your match and not hers. Time is on your side, not hers. It's a winnable match. Just need to keep to the game plan.
-The camera dude snaps me out of my day dream and I return back to the real world where I'm about to start a promo for GOL. Looking behind me, hangs a GOL banner. Why it's there.....no idea. Camera dude must had hung it out while I was going over the match in my head. To cold be doing this outside to begin with. Chicago during the winter is never a good idea, at any time, to be outside. GOL camera dude said it'd be good for the promo though......he explained it but I zoned out. What ever. Got a promo in my head.....talking points are spot on.......just need to let it out. No paid staffer to write my promo out. No Hollywood movie set to tell a story to win me over with the fans. No make up. No glitz or glamour. Just a guy in front of a camera letting the world know how he's going to win a match.
-All set and ready to go, the camera man gives me the ok to start the promo.
Jack Tillman: "You know......Kurt Newman always praised you as a wrestler Roxi. One of the few people in the industry that he actually liked because you were always true and honest to everyone you ever met. Never gave anyone any bull shit. Ever since your days in MPW, he looked up to you because you were special. In a sea of assholes and two faced pricks.....you were always a shining light in an industry full of darkness. You were one of the few wrestlers who knew how to mix between an entertainer and a professional wrestler and because of that, you earned Kurt's respect.
He would tell me stories about the adventures the two of you were in back in the MPW days. The hole in the wall bars the two of you and some of the other guys would.....where you'd close the place down. That one time in Hawaii where you ran the streets naked after a midget homeless dude stole your cloths at gun point. Even told I even time the two of you wrestled.
I've watched your career in MPW, WWO, UWF, LAW, and GOL. One of the hardest workers in the business today that is respected by all. I can only wish I can have the resume and career that you have and will continue to have.
I respect you Roxi.......out of the wrestling ring."
-Time to take the kid gloves off now as I lose the smile that I had on my face. It's quickly replaced with that of a stone cold wrestler.
Kurt Newman: "Inside though.........you're just like Kurt......or should I say, you will eventually be like Kurt.
Question Roxi, you know what Kurt is today? Or even where he's at? Have you been keeping tabs on Kurt since the last time the two of you saw each other? I know for a fact Kurt hasn't been in contact with you or pretty much anyone because Kurt's dealing with personal problems."
-I shouldn't go into Kurt's personal affairs like this........but people need to know what Kurt is going through right now. To proud of a man to ask for help or get kind words of encouragement. But he just doesn't want the messages and or phone calls coming his way. But I heard from Chris that's he's having problems again. So maybe a helpful voice from the past will do him some good.
Jack Tillman: "Kurt is in rehab, trying to fix a broken body that was caused by trying to get those oh my god moments that you love to have. He's trying to put the pieces back together for a jigsawed brain that will probably never be put back together because of all the concussion he's sustained over the years......probably just like you Roxi. He's addicted to pain pills that he consumed over the years just function in and out of that ring. You taking any pills these days Roxi to help you function Roxi? With the style of wrestling you like to perform in front of everyone, I'm sure you'll eventually end up just.....like.....Kurt. Broken both mentally and physically. Way past the point of no return to live a normal life.
This sound familiar Roxi? This sound like you.....maybe ten, five, one years down the road. You will eventually be just like Kurt Roxi because you're a risk taker just like Kurt. Looking at the then and now.....saying fuck it to the future and who you're going to hurt.....all because you wanted to get that adrenaline shot right in the arm....by putting you're body and soul on the line. Just....like.....a.....junkie.
It's already starting isn't t it Roxi? The pain. The suffering. The moments where your head gets dizzy and you don't know where you're at. How long does it take to get out of bed in the morning because you're in pain. How many pills are you taking just to function in life? The blue pill for the pain in your knees. The yellow one for the concussions. The pink one for the right eye that you can barely see out of any more. Oh and let's not forget about the green one for your hearing that's been getting worse since you took that kick to the head years ago in a house show in Boston.
You are a broken individual Roxi. And because you're broken......I'm going to win this match because I already know your weaknesses. I see the cracks in the amor. Bad neck. Bad knees. And a bad back. Am I wrong? So I'm going to do what Kurt taught me best......and that's going to ground and pound you until you're unable to function as a human being.
All for a victory and a piece of gold on a leather strap.
See Roxi.......Kurt didn't want me to be like him. He wanted me to have a long career.....a career where I wouldn't be a broken individual like him.....and you Roxi. So instead of doing flips and flops and diving over ropes......I was taught to keep the match slow, ground and pound, and punish my opponents with stiff strikes and painful submissions. Sure.....it'd be hard to separate myself from the rest of the crowd of wrestlers, but I'd survive. I'd be able to make shows. I wouldn't be in battling through pain. And my actions in that ring would be enough to where people would be able to see me. In the words of Kurt......in a sea full of sports entertainers, gimmick wrestlers, cosplayers, and muscle headed freaks........I'm going to beat them all because I know what I'm doing in that ring while everyone else.......won't know what the hell just hit them until it's to late. I'm a professional wrestler.....in a sea of frauds."
-By now, I'm inches away from the camera. I'm read I Netherlands face because I'm ready to fight. I'm ready to prove that I'm ready. But one more week Jack. One more week. I pause as I take a step back and take a couple of deep breaths as I collect my thoughts.
Jack Tillman: "So Roxi. I see a broken individual who weights 130 pounds, stands at 5'6, and is no longer the wrestler she used to be. While what do you see Roxi when you look at me huh? A young lion. Well trained. Ability to out wrestle and out perform anyone and everyone he steps in the ring with. An individual who knows how to take care of his body and isn't broken. Roxi I am the future of professional wrestling.......while you and you're type.......will soon.....be.....extinct.
Your Soaring Eagle Title.......its soon going to be mine. Your career.....it's soon going to be in my hands. GOL.....I'm going to be the face of this company. The wrestling industry.......I'm going to form it into my vision. No more gimmicks. No more characters. No more of what wrestling is today. It's time for the new school of professional wrestling. And this revolution will start at Hecho En Mexico when the new face of professional wrestling faces off against the dying breed of sports entertainment in Roxi Johnson."
-Walking right up to the camera, I show off my best game face as I give out a last line to mean that I'm serious.
Jack Tillman: "Evolve......or......die."
-I'm done talking. I'm done trying to think of catchy things to say. It's time for action. Time to hurt someone. With that, I walk off the set and away from the camera.
