After the Dia De Los Muertos CLUSTERFUCK in Mexico City, The Warped Tag Team Champions, HEWHOCORRUPTS and Sawtooth Grin, returned to Japan. Opting to remain active, The Outliers knuckled up in the main event at #109 against the Warped World Heavyweight Champion, and his number one contender. Now, with this highly anticipated Trios rematch, the international breadcrumb blood trail has brought them back to the States.. And with all that transpired the first time they encountered The Everyday Heroes? Rectifying the draw, the only blemish on their record, is the absolute furthest thing from their minds.
EMPORIUM ARCADE
Wicker Park Chicago
Bright light filters in from the wide front windows of the Emporium Arcade Bar in Chicago's Wicker Park neighborhood. Sawtooth Grin and Hewhocorrupts, the two halves of the Warped Tag Team Champions, sit next to each other, each nursing a pint full of dark beer. The pair are silhouetted by a light snow stuck to the street outside, itself faintly reflecting the soft box of a grey sky.
They're a couple days out from the Guerreors of Lucha Trios Championship rematch. But today they're in the corrupter's hometown, at one of their favorite bars, taking time to discuss a few things with a curious and impassioned beat writer.
The clacks and dings of pinball machines. A disheveled crew of young adults plow through the barricade of gamers in an attempt to reach the wrestlers. Corrupts with his back turned, can be seen calmly finessing himself into a high score, while Sawtooth turns his attention. Sipping his beer.
SLEUTH: It's an honor, guys. I'm with an indie webzine from here in Chicago. Someone sent me a text, and I shot over here as quickly as I could! I know The Outliers don't typically do this kinda' thing too often, but I also know HE WHO CORRUPTS is from here, so I'm pretty sure I can get away with it! Just a couple of questions!!
Sawtooth deadpans the simpering hopeful (whose discomfort builds), and nudges his partner as he slowly raises his cup for a drink. Corrupts casually spins around, and after pushing his sleeves up to his elbows, he props his back against the machine.
SLEUTH: Your camp has been quiet since the controversial finish to your last meeting with The Everyday Heroes.. How did you guys see the fight? How'd you feel about it being delcared a draw?
GRIN: It was good.. Pretty intense. Both sides had their moments. Course, we didn't operate as a full set for a majority of the bout. Which I wasn't happy about. The draw? I wasn't happy about that either. But.. We didn't get stuck on it.
SLEUTH: Obviously, tag team wrestling is the priority. You've got the Warped belts, this GOL fight is for Gold.. But Grin, your first match in GOL was in singles competition.. A match you won. With that, Pandora's Box. A shot at the Rey De Reyes. When are we finally gonna see you cash that in?
Sawtooth smiles and shrugs
GRIN: Epic gets thrown around quite a bit. That's what that was, though. Epic. I spend a lot more time reminiscing about how incredible that night was. Hardly none on that fucking box. I still got time. Do yourself a favor and forget about it.. when you do.. Probably around that time I'll be pretty close.
SLEUTH: HE WHO CORRUPTS, it's awesome to have you home.
HWC: I feel like you're trying to bait me into doing something cliche like singing 'Sweet Home Chicago' so I'll just say 'There's no place like home.'
The Sleuth lets a small and slightly nervous giggle slip.
HWC: Cliches.
SLEUTH: Do you mind if I ask for your thoughts on your last match with The Heroes, more specifically..
HWC: Being Chokeslammed through the frackin' ring. Sure! Well...Like Grin said, we didn't get stuck on it. But I did get stuck in it. To be honest, I'm not even mad..that was amazing. I was flying like a Foo Fighter humming 'There goes my heroes watch them as they go..' No joke. It was just like the satellite fight in Cable Guy..it's ok I understand my purpose now, I guess somebody had to kill the babysitter. I'm glad someone was able to block out the voices in my head for five minutes, the voices that scream, over and over again. Why do they come to me to die? Why do they come to me to die?
Suddenly, Corrupts collapses. Blackout. Black as holes within a memory. Perhaps the damage inflicted at the hands of The Heroes was more than HWC was willing to admit. Ostensibly feigning a picture of perfect health like a wounded animal careful to hide any injury his enemy might exploit. It would seem The Everyday Heroes are no joke.
