003 * The Big Time
Scene 001 - SoCal Grappling Arts Center - San Diego, CA - 06/23/2016
*The newly renovated wrestling school is ready to be opened, and Avery Miles III cannot be happier. He has had plenty of ups and downs; both professionally and personally. As of late, it have been more peaks than valleys. Balloons adore the whole center as local press, staff, and special guests all take their seats. Avery stands inside of the ring and looks over the ropes. To his right, Indy Pro Wrestling Executive Vice President, Hayden Phoenix. Joining him, retired talent and part-time trainer Raymond Brothers. Avery readies and the crowd of people quiet down*
Avery: I am excited to be here today. It was not too long ago that I was spilling my own blood and sweat inside of the facility. Long gone are the days of Fletch, the “Old Man”, running things the same way as he had for the previous fifty years. A dark and damp gym that had the same equipment since the second World War. I was the last trainee to come out of this school, and here we are years later, the school ready to open for the next generation. Brand new ring, brand new equipment, and a complete renovations. But the important part, is a full time staff and the backing of myself and those that have helped me to train. For our grand opening I decided that both honor the old and welcome the new, a name change would be in order.
*Avery unties a rope dropping a banner revealing the new name of the former SoCal Grappling Arts Center*
Avery: The SoCal Grappling Academy, or SGA for short. It is important for us to established a presence first in the local community, followed by the region, state, nationally, and finally becoming a worldwide known place for training the best and brightest. I also can officially announce that the first ever student of the Academy will be someone that I personally have known for the majority of my life; Taylor Devereaux. She will be trained through a boot camp given here by the trainers, as well as continuing training with myself one-on-one. And for me, I will continue to be hands on training the next generation. I am nowhere near finished in my career, quite the contrary; I am just getting going. But coming from a line of Miles men that taught each other, and thanks to the “Old Man”, I feel like this is the most obvious thing to do. I am excited and will come back to San Diego as often as possible. Thank you all for being here, I appreciate it. Enjoy the catering, and have a look around!
*A round of applause as Avery heads out of the ring off to the side. Taylor is waiting for him. As he heads down the steel stairs, she quickly jumps up into his arms. He smiles, as Taylor plants a kiss on him*
Avery: Hey you! Sorry about that, I figured announcing that you were training under the school would help to give us some more… acknowledgement. Plus, you’ve been coming along pretty well.
*Avery wraps his arm around her as the two of them head into the back for a few moments*
Taylor: I was just… surprised. I am honored, Ave. I really am.
Avery: Well, it is only a matter of time before you start looking for somewhere to sign.
*She bumps him away playfully*
Taylor: Whatever Avery, I have a long way to go!
*She laughs*
Taylor: I am so proud of you. Fletch would be. Your dad is. And you grandpa would be too.
Avery: Thanks Tay. I just…
*He pauses, taking a deep breath*
Avery: … I want to push the next generation further. It was hard for me, but it paid off in the end. And I want to teach that way. The old school way. I want them to know what it is like to pay their dues. To actually earn respect, not just expect it. And at the end of the day, my home is NGW and all of this extra… all of it… it only helps me and my home. Wrestling in Vegas and Texas, the shows in Indy… the new Academy… and the Super Falcon Cup. All of it… it just all makes sense for me. And I want it to help to push forth the Academy.
*The two of them have a seat on a couch in his office*
Avery: I cannot wait to get this monkey suit off.
Taylor: You look pretty cute in it.
*She grabs and pulls at his tie as the scene comes to an end*
Scene 002 - The Labyrinth - Los Angeles, CA - June 24th. 2016
*Avery Miles III sits in the middle of the ring, cross legged. He is dressed already in his gear as his eyes scan the arena*
The Semi-Finals of the Super Falcon Cup. Originally, this was a three way dance, but it looks like it is down to the two of us; Aidan Carlisle and myself. Before we get into it, I was sitting back and thinking. I know what a falcon is, but what is the significance? After doing some reading and watching some Discovery Channel, I got myself up to speed. One of thirty-seven species of bird of prey; a group that includes hawks, eagles, vultures, and buzzards. Falcons have thin, tapered wings that allow high rates of speed while flying and the ability to quickly shift their direction. After seeing what they can do in the air, it only makes sense that people like Aidan and myself have made it into the Semi-Finals. Living or dying by what we can do in the air, it is the rush of wind as he leap into the air and dive back down onto our opponent. She beat Kang Mina in the first round to earn her spot in this match. Or was it I that earned a spot in this match with her?
She is a well-decorated wrestler, and has been successful in the different companies that she has signed in. From her technical ability to the speed and overall ability that she carries inside of the ring, I know that both of our styles will work together and a great display will be put on for the fans in attendance. We both will put our bodies on the line and push our own endurance to the limits. We will leave no less than one hundred percent inside of this ring… and then some. Knowing the taste of glory, and the pain of defeat… there is no thought in my mind that allows me to consider a loss. I no longer do this for me… I do this for my family. I do this for my extended family, representing NGW. I am proud of where I am, and what I have done to get here. By no means am I saying that Aidan does not want this nor does it mean that she does not want to represent her company to its fullest.
This industry is competitive and we all want to be the very best. So many people know the big names in the industry… and Aidan has been in two of those places. Places that companies like GOL and NGW look up to. Setting the standard. Raising the bar. For me? Winning this tournament would show that our little corner of the industry gets to be noticed. We get some acknowledgement that we are talented, and we put forth a great product.
*Avery reaches back, and pushes up from his hands to climb to his feet. He stands up and spins slowly, again scanning the arena. He imagines a packed arena with cheering fans*
For me, this is not a need-to-win match. This is not a must win. It is just a… win. A small fish in a much bigger pond, I am going to make a splash that is going to be remembered for a long time coming. We cannot win every match, and I am not in the business of making guarantees. I lose to the hands of Sam Washington last month, but I am not in the business of street fighting. I am an athlete. I am a wrestler. I fly high, and I use my speed to my advantage. Weapons are not my weapon of choice; my body is.
I will be damned before I let a hateful man like Washington keep me down, and I will be damned if I let it affect my match with Aidan. A title may not be on the line, but pride is. Glory is. And representation of our home companies is.
*Avery looks into the camera, and offers his hand as though he is offering to shake those watching the video*
I offer you the best of luck Aidan. You are a great competitor, and facing you I will soon learn how truly talented I can be as well. I respect you fully, and it is my honor to be booked against you. Win or loss, I would like to raise your hand.
Buena suerte.
