001 * The Underdog
Scene 001 - The Labyrinth - Los Angeles, CA - April 29th. 2016
*Avery Miles III is inside of The Labyrinth, the home of Guerreros of Lucha. Avery raises his hand and follows along the walls of masks. He looks them up and down, taking in all of the history and the pageantry of the Luchador. Wrestling some time in Southern California and in Northern Mexican cities, Miles is no stranger to the Luchador style. For a short time he donned a mask as well, wrestling as La Miles de Tercera Generación. Miles was trained in the style of the Luchador in some of the most cramped, and oldest wrestling schools. From Tijuana to Chihuahua, and all points in between, Avery Miles III learned his aerial assault and made the basis for the wrestler that he is today.*
Wrestling is a sport of winners and losers. Often it is Davids vs Goliaths. And a running story often goes for a favorite to win a match or a title to face a far lesser known opponent; that is the underdog story. Quite often there is insurmountable chances for the underdog to overcome and all hope seems lost, and yet even the underdog can see the light through the darkness. For someone like Tiger Mask Red, I am that underdog. I am a nobody to him; just another small blimp in his career. Having his choice to represent who he wants in this tournament, and being a champion as well. Winning the very first GOL match can go a long way to have you remembered in the history of what could very well be a long-lasting company.
Being here brings back so many memories and helps me to remember my own beginnings. I have come a long way in a short time, but never forget my foots. It is because of so many veterans that I learned how to do things the right way and how to best pay my dues. I put in the work. I put in the system. I lived the traditions. And now… now I get to reap the rewards of my hard work.
*Avery reaches into his hoody pocket and pulls out a mask, smiling at it. He holds it up to the wall and fastens it with the collection of masks already on the wall as he will be forever cemented into the history books of Guerreros of Lucha. He peeks around the arena seeing what could be seen as a rundown venue by most, but for Avery, it feels more like home than most would want to admit*
Scene 002 - Auditorio Fausto Gutierrez Moreno - Tijuana, MX - FLASHBACK 2013
*Backstage for a local wrestling show, Avery Miles III is getting ready to begin his career internationally. He slides his mask on and gets dressed inside of the locker room. He is a stranger in a new place, but a man adorning a fiery red and orange mask makes his way to the young man and sits next to him on the bench*
Man: It’s okay, man. I’ve seen you… we got this.
*The man does what he can to calm Avery*
Man: Just pretend this is just another match. Another venue. You will get the boos right away, but just do what you do and they will come around. We will work together to put on a show, and start things off right. Got it?
*The man offers out a hand as Avery looks up to him. He nods, reaches out, and shakes his hand. Music is heard from inside of the arena*
Man: See you out there!
*The man enters the arena much to the cheers of the fans. Avery Miles III, sporting his mask, is announced to the crowd as La Miles de Tercera Generación from California. The boos from the crowd as he is an outsider in his first match here in the city. He faces El Hijo del Fuego in the opening contest. There are maybe hundreds of fans in attendance, but they are raucous as crowds of much larger numbers. Both men wait inside of the ring for the bell to ring*
DING DING DING
*The match begins as the two men circle, with Miles sliding in and taking Fuego down with a fireman’s carry. Fuego kicks his legs up and catches Miles, flipping him frontwards but he lands back onto his feet. Miles quickly half-turns as Fuego kips up and the two men offer a staredown. The crowd chants and cheers, seeing what they are in for. The two men step forward and lock up trying to gain an advantage on each other; this time Miles gets the advantage and shoots Fuego into the rope. Miles is able to connect with a standing dropkick sending Fuego to the ground. After a two count, both men reset. They battle back and forth for some time before the ending of the match comes*
“Llévalo a casa” the referee whispers to the men.
*Miles is able to connect with a double knee backbreaker sending Fuego to the mat. Miles climbs the corner and his a 450 Splash to the competitor below*
¡Uno! ¡Dos! ¡Tres!
DING DING DING
*Miles wins his first match in Mexico, and the fans are delighted to have seen the birth of a new star. Both men make their way into the back and once the match is over, they embraced each other with respect. The first part of Avery’s career outside of California has begun and he will soon learn life lessons that are only experienced when jumping in head first*
Scene 003 - The Labyrinth - Los Angeles, CA - April 29th. 2016
*Avery makes his way to the middle of the ring and runs the ropes a few times to get a feel for things*
When Devlin Scott, NGW’s owner, came to me asking me to represent the company I was taken back. But I have to admit that I was flattered as well. Being a young talent, I was not entirely sure what it meant to represent a whole company but I am quickly learning what responsibility comes with that. I have expanded my horizons as of late, both into Valentine Wrestling Syndicate and to Classic Wrestling from Texas. I am a man that cannot limit myself, and to help gain exposure for both myself and my home promotion I want to stretch my professional wings. Accepting a place in the Super Falcon Cup was equally a reward and a challenge. I know what it means to be a luchador, and I know that it is something to be held to the highest respect. It is important for me to show that I understand the tradition and the rich history, but am still wanting to make a name for myself at the same time.
I am matched up against Tiger Mask Red in the first round of the tournament. Will he be an easy opponent? By no means. He said it himself, he is a former champion in Pollomania and being the defending champion in Strike Towers. Am I coming into “his house”? Unequivocally yes. Does that throw me off of my A-game and give him the upper hand?
*Avery shakes his head side to side*
No way. I appreciate that GOL has enough faith in me to put myself up against what could be the favorite in this whole tournament. Some would complain about having to face my opponent in the very first round, but I welcome all challenges. I want to face the best, and it looks like that is what I have. And he had plenty of things to say about me; and I can’t front that I have lost some major matches in my early career. That is the thing, though… early career. I have years ahead of me, and having two Five Lakes title shots and a Marquee title shot in New Generation Wrestling so far… I’d say not bad. By the way, I just won the Tag Team Championship with a partner that I was wrestling with for the first time. And I will also be flying out to New York City for yet another… title shot. This one being in VWS. I appreciate you pointing out the title matches that I have had, but it looks like they won’t be the only ones that I ever have. I was hand picked by NGW brass to represent the company and I will do them proud. Don’t think that you can get off easy, Red.
*Avery climbs to the top of the corner and perches himself with each foot on the middle rope for balance*
I am coming into YOUR house, to fight YOUR style of wrestling. What will happen when this choke artist upsets the handpick representative from GOL; and they no longer have a horse in this race? Now I am not brash enough to say this I will easily walk in and win, or that you have no choice. I respect my opponents, regardless if others think that they deserve it or not. And I respect the thought that matches need to be battled before a winner can be crowned. It appears that you did some research on me, and I appreciate that. I did manage to do some research on you, but I find myself wanting to learn more about you from inside of the four sides of the ring. I do not want your ego to cloud my own thoughts of you; because that would not be fair. Just like you counting me out because of a small sample size of matches that you simply looked up in the record books instead of watching the actual match footage. If you had done your research, you would know the exact sort of guy I am. Fair is fair, though. I will simply have to show you what I can do. I will bring everything that I have, and will make sure to show you why you should reconsider the meaning of respect.
