{The scene opens with Roxi wrapping presents with Keira. It’s later at night, and Nate is already tucked away in his crib.}
Keira – Well, I guess there’s one bad thing about Christmas.
Roxi – Yeah, the clean up.
Keira – And wrapping all this stuff!
Roxi – Well, we have stuff to send to my sister, my mom and dad, your sisters and their families, aunts and uncles, cousins and the like.
Keira – And what do we get?
Roxi – We got Christmas cards…
{Keira frowns.}
Keira – Not really a fair trade.
Roxi – Oh stop. We’re almost done here.
Keira – Yeah, yeah, I’m sorry. I guess I’m still a kid at heart.
Roxi – See, now we’ve entered the adult phase. We give presents, we don’t get many.
Keira – It’s a jip.
Roxi – It’s adult-ing.
Keira – Whatever.
Roxi – At least this year, we’ll get to see the joy in Nate’s face when he opens presents.
{Keira thinks about this for a moment, and it brings a smile to her face.}
Keira – Yeah. That’s gonna be great. He’s just growing up so fast.
Roxi – I know… I’m sad.
Keira – Yeah, I remember, you wanted him to be tiny forever.
Roxi – Hey, I’ve gotten used to toddler Nate. He’s just as special now as he was then.
Keira – I think it’s safe to say he’ll always be special.
{Keira walks over and hugs Roxi from behind as she begins cutting more wrapping paper, but Keira actually thinks about what she says.}
Keira – Wait… you don’t think I mean, special but… you know, that kind of special?
Roxi – He hasn’t shown any signs yet.
Kiera – I just… I mean, he doesn’t need that burden.
Roxi – His normal doctor can’t detect anything wrong or anything abnormal. He’s a healthy, growing boy. Now stop worrying and help me finish wrapping so we can get started on baking.
Keira – What are you making?
Roxi – Fudge, Cinnimon Raisin cookies, sugar cookies, and two pies.
Keira – Yum!
Roxi – That YOU are not touching until Christmas. Don’t make me put Nate in charge while I’m gone!
{Keira feigns shock, placing her hand over her heart.}
Keira – I would never! I can’t believe you would accuse me of something like that!
{Keira folds her arms, pouting.}
Roxi – I mean it. You don’t touch those cookies. Or the pies.
Keira – I don’t see why you have to leave Christmas Eve, it’s not fair!
Roxi – Wrestling and making other people happy are two my specialties Keira. It’s when the show was scheduled so, I’ve got to.
Keira – Can’t you just say you’re snowed in?!
Roxi – First of all, we live in Florida, second of all, I’m the Rey de Reyes champion, and I’ve got history to make!
Keira – It’s just sucks you won’t be here even for the eve.
Roxi – I’ll be back as soon as I can. I won’t miss Christmas. I promise.
Keira – Well, at least the wrapping is getting done now, instead of having to wait.
Roxi – It’ll get done. You still will have to cut up fruit and veggies for the trays.
Keira – I know, I know.
{Suddenly, there is a knock at the door. Roxi and Keira look at each other in confusion.}
Roxi – Who could that be at this hour?
{Roxi goes to the door and opens it. A woman in her mid-twenties stands there, a small, shy smile on her face.}
Roxi – Can I help you?
{The woman’s smile dissipates, and she nervously clears her throat before speaking.}
WoMan – Hi. I.. um… I didn’t think you would remember me. But, um, I mean, I was hoping you would but…
Roxi – I’m sorry, I don’t really know you. Is there something you need?
WoMan – Yeah, um, I just wanted to… say thank you.
Roxi – “Thank you”? For what exactly?
WoMan – You, um… kinda… saved my life.
Roxi – I did?
WoMan – Right, you… you don’t recognize me. I um… I’m Alexis.
Roxi – Alexis…. Alexis doesn’t really…. Ring a bell. You’re not a wrestler are you?
Alexis – No, no um… I think you might remember if I … um… showed you this picture…
{Alexis reaches into her purse, producing an older photo of herself. Roxi is visibly shaken by the photo which shows Alexis very frail and deep bruises on her arms and hands, alongside a man in the photo. Roxi looks down at the photo with a mix of anger and sorrow..}
Roxi – Cyrus…
{She looks up at Alexis and noticing that the woman now looks completely normal and healed, her face lights up.}
Roxi – Wait… Alexis?
Alexis – Yeah…
{Roxi takes a moment and embraces Alexis and the two share a laugh to break the nervous tension.}
Roxi – I can’t believe this. I mean… You look great!
Alexis – I um… I kicked the habit thanks to you. No more marks. I got back on my feet.
Roxi – Thanks amazing!
{Keira comes to the door.}
Keira – Who is this?
{Alexis sees Keira and backs away, slowly.}
Alexis – Whoa… I…
Keira – What’s wrong with her?
Roxi – Oh… oh there’s…. there a lot to explain. Look Alexis.. it’s okay. I promise. She’s perfectly fine.
Keira – What? What’s that supposed to mean?
{Roxi turns to Keira, then back to Alexis.}
Roxi – One second.
{Roxi closes the door and turns back to Keira.}
Keira – Who the heck is that?
Roxi – You may not remember this but… when I left… and the thing with Cyrus…
{Keira’s eyes narrow.}
Keira – I remember that…
Roxi – That girl out there, she helped take care of me. And Cyrus beat her, kept her addicted to morphine. After the whole Sin incident… I took all of you to the hospital. And she… she got clean.
Keira – That’s great! I’m super happy for her, so why is she being so weird.
Roxi – Because the only way she remembers you, is that you were Sin.
{Keira frowns and drops her head and sighs.}
Keira – It just won’t die…
Roxi – Hey, hey, it’ll be fine. Just be you and everything will be fine.
{Roxi kisses Keira on the forehead and opens the door.}
Roxi – Sorry about that. Alexis, this is Keira, she’s… my wife.
Alexis – You… married her?
Keira – I… I wasn’t myself, as you probably remember. I just I went through some crazy stuff and I’m trying to put that behind me. I’m totally normal and if I said or did anything to you while I was… altered… I’m sorry.
Alexis – Yeah…
Keira – I don’t remember much about that time in my life and it just got out of control. I’m not here to hurt you.
Alexis – Oh… um… okay.
Roxi – Alexis, why don’t you come inside for some coffee or something, we’ll catch up.
Alexis – I.. um, I was just here to say thanks.
Roxi – You can’t tell me you came all this way just to say thank you. Come on, we don’t bite. I’m interested to hear how this all happened.
Keira – We are both… really happy for you.
Alexis – I’m glad you guys are as welcoming as you but um… I actually have to run.
Roxi – It’s not a problem at all.
{A car door slams and a tall man exits the car and walks to Alexis.}
Man – Is everything okay?
Alexis – Yeah.
{He sticks his hand out to Roxi and Keira.}
Man – I’m Troy. I’m Alexis’ boyfriend.
Roxi – Oh, it’s a pleasure to meet you.
Troy – Likewise. I met Alexis about a year ago in recovery.
Roxi – That’s wonderful. I’m glad that you guys found each other.
Alexis – It’s all thanks to you really. Troy and I are… engaged.
Keira – That’s great!
Troy – Lexi has a bit of a problem coming out with things, but we’re getting there. She was here to thank you and, once we, ahem, pick out a date, she wanted you to come.
Roxi – Really? That’s… that’s great. We’ll come for sure!
Alexis – You will? That’s awesome. I mean… I, I wouldn’t be here without you.
Roxi – It’s what we’re here for.
Alexis – Well, we should, we should really get going, I’m just… I’m so glad I found you.
{Alexis wraps her arms around Roxi with a tight hug. Roxi returns the favor.}
Roxi – It’s my pleasure. I’m glad you’re doing so well and you’re happy.
Alexis – Couldn’t be happier. But we should get going, we got a bit of a trip up to North Carolina.
Roxi – Right.
Alexis – Thanks again. For… saving my life.
Roxi – It’s my pleasure.
{Roxi looks at Troy.}
Roxi – Take care of her.
Troy – Oh, it’s a promise.
{Alexis and Troy turn to walk away.}
Alexis – Merry Christmas.
Roxi – Merry Christmas.
{The two leave as Roxi and Keira watch them walk away.}
Keira – I guess… we make more of a difference than I realized.
Roxi – It doesn’t happen often, but things like that… make it all worth it.
Keira – It is the giving season after all.
Roxi – That it is. Come on, we got cookies to bake.
Keira – Can’t I just have one before Christmas?
Roxi – I said no.
{Roxi and Keira head back into the house and the scene fades.}
Greetings once again Amigos y Amigas!
Well, it’s that time of year one more time and here I am, with a smile on my face, and a championship around my waist. And once again, I step into the ring to defend it. And you know, I’ve been looking forward to this match ever since it was announced. Avery did win a number one contender’s match, but I’m not picky about who I have to face. I am excited, honored and thrilled be defending the Rey de Reyes championship against one Avery Miles III. Former holder of this very championship. Now, I would say right now that we’re cool and everything is looking like it’s going to be gangbusters and Avery and I will tear the house down when it comes to this match. But things recently have just been bugging me.
First, I was really hoping to be Guerrero of the year, but that honor went to Honey. I’m happy for Honey and all, but I’d like to think that I’ve been little more successful and accomplished a little more than she did, but I’m not in charge of who wins what around GOL. But, winning Match of the Year and Booker’s choice was a nice little consolation prize after missing out on the big one.
So, all in all, I’m not completely satisfied with that, I’m always aiming to be the best, and so is Mr. Miles. However, Mr. Miles continues this whole thing about MY championship, being rightfully his. That MY championship was somehow stolen from him. I’ve here to just put that line of silliness to bed right here and now.
You see, championships come and go in wrestling. You win some, you lose some, and there’s a few things you can do when you lose one. You can learn from the experience. You can try to get better, or in Mr. Miles case, you can hold a grudge for almost a year. Because that’s what this entire argument is right now. Because Avery, after defending his championship successfully against Tiger Mask Red, had Sawtooth Grin open Pandora’s box on him. And even though he bravely fought to hold onto the championship, Sawtooth got the better of him. That’s really it, the end of the tale. But now, it seems that, rather than face Sawtooth for his rematch, and put all of this to bed, Mr. Miles took time to heal himself up, to take a hiatus, or whatever he wants to call it, and walked away from GOL. And there was no denying that he was a great, and honorable champion, who was caught off guard by a cash-in and just didn’t have enough left. His reign was great, he had amazing matches and he came up short on a cash-in. There’s nothing to be ashamed of given everything that happened. But that is the nature of wrestling and people who have those types of banked title shots. Avery Miles was just a victim of circumstance. But, if you see these tweets and the promos, it sounds an awful lot like Mr. Miles will not let it go.
Going so far as to say this championship is his and he’s just taking it back? Quite frankly, I find insulting. I have been here fighting from the bottom to the top since my first day here. I walked into GOL and I won the Soaring Eagle championship, and I defended it for almost a year. 302 days to be exact. I made that championship what it is today, in the hands of Juliet Brooks. And I handed it over to GOL, because I had my sights set on bigger prizes. And I beat the man who beat him. This championship is around my waist because I did what Avery Miles didn’t do. And come Christmas Eve, when Avery and I step into the mind, I will have surpassed his reign of 146 days, by one. And let’s not kid ourselves by trying to paint this picture that Avery Miles III was the first Rey de Reyes champion. That would be La Cucaracha, and He beat her. So, for all intents and purposes it’s HER championship just as much as Mr. Miles. But you don’t see her, or Sawtooth, complaining about how a championship is THEIRS, you just hear Avery Miles. Because of some kind of warped sense of injustice he has. This championship, the Rey De Reyes championship, is MINE. I earned my way to wrestle for it, by winning the La Azteca Rumble, I beat Sawtooth Grin in the middle of the ring, and I won this championship right then and there. So no, one wrestler taking advantage of another at a vulnerable spot isn’t highway robbery. Did it suck? Yes. I’ll gladly give Mr. Miles that. But again, this seems to be nothing but sour grapes. I had two amazing wrestlers try and beat me in the same match, Amy Jo Smyth and Honey, and I wouldn’t be doing this act Mr. Miles is doing had I lost. I had Julian Tijerina open pandora’s box on me, and he failed. I’ve had the hardships, I’ve had the challenges thrown at me much like Mr. Miles. I expect that as champion. It seems that Mr. Miles was woefully unaware he had a massive target on his back holding this championship or something. Avery Miles is a third generation wrestler and he didn’t realize this. It’s like….seemingly, that Mr. Miles wants some kind of sympathy or is in search of some kind of justification for losing a championship match.
People know me, and know I’m a compassionate person, but in this instance, I do not see Mr. Miles gripe. Sawtooth took advantage of a situation. Avery Miles could have easily dusted himself off, took his time off, healed, come back and done everything the same as he has currently done, and everything would be just fine. But to try and infer that I either didn’t earn this championship, or that this championship was somehow his and I’m just holding it for him, is utter nonsense. All it has done is made me more determined to make my own history. It’s just fueling me to be even better than before.
So, unfortunately, I have to be the bearer of bad news for Mr. Miles. He will NOT be making any history at my expense. Because winning doesn’t solve anything for Mr. Miles. It’s not going erase anything, as he is trying to get across. That becoming a two time champion is the GOL history eraser button. This is just a silly notion, and Mr. Miles in reality is just asking for what seems like a “do-over” a “mulligan” because his title reign didn’t end the way he thought it would. Any champion would very much like to defend the championship for a long time, and ride off into the sunset without having ever lost it. And the reality is, it usually never ends up that. Someone comes along who will take the championship from you. We all don’t get storybook endings as champions, and sometimes, it’s worse than you can expect. Because that kind of thing happens. I understand what Mr. Miles means and has in his heart, because the Rey De Reyes championship is coveted. It’s a championship many would love to hold. But right now, it’s around my waist, and my history making moment strengthens my claim as one of the best. Being a two-time champion would be nice and all, but one solid year, without a blemish on my record is something I’m motivated to achieve. I really didn’t need any more motivation other than just keeping this championship and making it something special, but one year without a loss practically unheard of with the amount of talent in GOL, not just GOL but wrestling period. And here I am, on the cusp of something truly special. And Avery Miles is standing in the way of that.
Mr. Miles is in this spot, because he earned it, and I’m the champion, because I earned that. I have no doubt that Avery is going to bring the house, that’s all well and good. I expect his best, but like I said, I earned this, and Avery is going to have to practically kill me to take it from me. I’m not going to be denied history because he decided that now he was ready to step back in the ring and take it. It doesn’t work that way. I’ve been on my game for a long time, and that won’t end on Christmas Eve simply because he THINKS he’s taking something back. Not by a long shot.
I am usually in a giving mood, and it’s the holiday season and things are a lot more laid back and relaxed and it’s more about celebration, but this championship, MY championship is something I’m in the mood to give away or lose any time soon. Avery Miles is going to not only be tested like he’s never been tested before, he’s going to come up short and lose. His original title reign will stand alone as a testament to his legacy, and this will be mine. My legacy, my goal, is to be the best. And that means, as great of a champion and wrestler as Avery Miles is, he has to fall. I’m not done with this championship just yet, I have much, much more to do with it. So, one final Christmas gift from me to everyone, is history, when I stake my claim as the best wrestler in GOL history. What a fitting way to finish everything up for 2017, and carry on into 2018.
So, apologies to Avery Miles. You have plenty to be proud of, plenty to compete for, and plenty left to give, and given time, I know you will be the GOL champion once again. But your history, will have to wait, because Christmas Eve, you’re going to lose. And I will be standing with MY championship one more time in 2017.
I wish Avery the best of luck. I wish him and all of you a wonderful and safe Christmas holiday, and a happy and healthy New Year. As this superhero has one last great adventure in 2017.
Onward to history!
I will see you all soon!
Keira – Well, I guess there’s one bad thing about Christmas.
